64% of National Alliance of Agriculture Allied Workers Union (NAAWU) members are women, with many belonging to Dalit and Adivasi communities engaged in agricultural and allied sectors. The campaign launched by NAAWU is grounded in the principles of gender justice, equality, and the empowerment of women.
Through advocacy initiatives, signature campaigns, submission of memorandums to government officials, and dissemination of news coverage, the campaign puts forward the following key demands:
Equal Wages: Guaranteeing that women receive equal and fair pay, recognizing their significant contribution to the agricultural workforce.
Access to Resources: Advancing women’s economic independence by ensuring access to land and distributing land to landless women, enabling greater autonomy and decision-making power.
Legal Protection: Advocating for the effective implementation of laws that protect women from violence and exploitation in both the workplace and domestic environments.
Maternity Rights: Demanding comprehensive maternity benefits, including paid leave, healthcare access, and workplace protections for pregnant and nursing women in agricultural allied work.
By fostering women’s leadership and encouraging their active participation in union leadership and decision-making roles across the agricultural sector empowers the NAAWU women to voice out their demands to the government.Â
